EDUCATION

Following the introduction of top up fees, latest figures show that students are applying to university in record numbers and are taking a more pragmatic approach than ever before, actively seeking out courses with the best employment prospects and higher salaries.

In the increasingly competitive higher education market place, marketing is now much more of a necessity and a "given" in order to attract more students. Education has become a competitive business; it is now all about the consumer, the product, the reputation, the brand and the marketplace.

Structural changes, along with changing student expectations and the need to maintain sustainable businesses have had a significant impact on administrative and support roles within universities. There is growing recognition of the importance of all employees and a need for greater/appropriate recognition for teaching and student support roles rather than for the academics alone. Universities are beginning to identify the potential benefits achieved through investing in their staff; by actively aiming to improve inclusion, by joint partnership working, by promoting professional development and by investing in leadership and development activities for their staff.

This dynamic and involving sector, together with increased competition, has meant university staff are forever facing new challenges.
